Its goal has been to study the processes at play in the formation of stars and the evolution of galaxies. Its detectors pick up the light coming from the frigid clouds of gas and dust that are being warmed by the brilliant newborn stars buried within them.

This is long wavelength light, beyond the detection of our eyes or a telescope like Hubble. It is in the far-infrared.

To pick it up, parts of Herschel’s instruments have to be cooled to near absolute zero (-273.15C), and this has been made possible by a store of superchilled helium. The telescope was launched with more than 2,000 litres, and this has been gradually boiling off as operations have progressed.

When it is all gone, the temperature of the instruments and their detectors will rise and the telescope will go blind.

The minimum expectation had been for 3.5 years of observations. The amount of helium still left in Herschel’s tank, or cryostat, means this objective should be surpassed easily.

Dr Meixner said Herschel’s legacy would be long-lived.

“The thing about the great observatories is that they make huge data archives that live on for decades.

“Herschel, because of its exquisite sensitivity, really is going to be a pathfinder for future projects in this area for at least 30-plus years.

“Facilities just coming online like [the radio telescope] Alma have very small fields of view – people need to know where to point, and they are going to run to the Herschel archive and say ‘where do I look?’. It’s how they will do their source selection.”

Dr Meixner showed the meeting an image she has just acquired using Herschel. It is a view of the Large Magallenic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy to our own Milky Way.

“It’s my latest pride and joy,” she told BBC News.

“It looks like a fiery image, but what you’re seeing there is all the dust emission from that galaxy. It’s very knotty and filamentous – it’s sort of like the chaos of creation. Those filaments and stuff are where the stars are going to form in that galaxy.”>

Leonis But if you try to click on this object when you get to Google Sky or Sky Map, you don’t get any identification of this object-it is unidentified-STRANGE! ! This star has not been in any astronomy books for very long; because no one could see it up there in the heavens until they started taking pictures of the night sky with telescopes and satellites capable of filming in infrared!

Herschel, not Hubble, now has the largest mirror in space—an 11.5-foot giant (1.5 times as large as Hubble’s) that made it to space last May and opened to the universe for the first time in June. As of early Wednesday, there were still no reports of deaths from Tuesday’s magnitude-7.4 quake centered near the border between the southern states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, even after 10 aftershocks. Interior Secretary Alejandro Poire said Tuesday night that nine people were injured in Oaxaca and two in Mexico City.

Seismologists and civil protection officials said where the earthquake hit and how it hit appear to have limited the damage, along with improved construction in the capital following a massive 1985 quake.

There were reports of damaged buildings but none were reported to have collapsed on the Oaxaca side of the border, said civil protection spokeswoman Cynthia Tovar said. In Guerrero, home to Acapulco where little damage was reported, officials say about 800 homes were damaged and 60 collapsed.

The liklihood that there will be another megaquake and axis shift on march 22, 2012 is very high. In my opinion, the cause of these shifts is a massive celestial object moving inward from the 9 o’clock orientation of the solar system/ springtime/ constellations Leo-Orion.

The effects on the planet are directly correlated to Earth’s orientation relative to the massive object, with shifts of Earth’s axis occuring every 377 days, and significant Earthquakes every 188-9 days.

There is a chance the shift could occur later, IF the celestial object makes entry into the inner solar system, thus changing it’s orientation relative to Earth. But there is no way to determine this without an infrared telescope and trained astronomers, of which, only the elites have access to, and they have developed a policy of secrecy on the topic. So information is hard to come by.

Better to be prepared now, but at the very least, leave danger zones before March 22nd.>

A strong earthquake damaged hundreds of homes in southern Mexico Tuesday and rattled residents hundreds of miles away in the nation’s capital.

The quake had a magnitude of 7.4, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, and its epicenter was about 15 miles (25 kilometers) east of Ometepec, Guerrero.

At least 500 homes in the southern coastal state were damaged, Gov. Angel Aguirre told reporters. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries or deaths.

Authorities were still surveying the area Tuesday evening, and reports differed about the extent of damage.

Officials reported that at least 800 houses had collapsed in the town of Igualapa, the Guerrero state government said in a statement. Later Tuesday, the head of Guerrero’s civil protection department said state authorities had not yet surveyed the town or confirmed that report.

Residents rushed into the streets after feeling the temblor in Mexico City, about 200 miles (320 km) away from the epicenter. Tourists and residents also felt the earthquake in the resort city of Acapulco.

Calderon said that there were no immediate reports of serious damage, and that the nation’s health system was operating normally.

“There are some broken windows, much fear, much panic,” he said.

More than 20 tonnes of the fish is currently carpeting the beach of Kvaenes, in Nordreisa, with experts views differing on how they have come to be there. Earth’s Force Field
The Earths magnetic field, the protector of all life on Earth is under constant attack from deadly cosmic radiation. This invisible shield that we live in is weakening in a region over the South Atlantic, leaving it exposed to potentially lethal radiation. Is the Earth losing its magnetic field and doomed to a fate similar to Mars? Many scientists believe the answer lies in paleomagnetic data, and that this weakening may be a precursor to a magnetic field reversal; scientists know Earth is long overdue. However, humans were not around when the last reversal took place, so what does this mean for life?
